Handicap Format — Two Categories

This year the Gorges Grand Prix may run as two separate handicap races to make sure everyone gets a fair, competitive day out.

  • Cat 1 Handicap
  • For riders who usually race Elite, A Grade, or strong B Grade. Expect fast bunches, aggressive racing, and all-out competition for the big prizes.
  • Cat 2 Handicap
  • For riders who usually race C Grade, D Grade, or steadier B Grade. The racing is still sharp, but the pace is set to suit developing riders or those who prefer a slightly easier tempo at the start.

How it works:

Both categories will run as full handicap races — slower groups go first, faster groups chase. You’ll still have the thrill of working with your bunch, chasing, and possibly holding off those behind.

Which category should I choose?

Pick the one that matches your usual racing grade or the pace you’re comfortable with. If in doubt, enter Cat 2 — but be aware you may be moved if handicappers think you belong in Cat 1.

FAQ

Is this a road race in Canterbury suitable as a tune-up for Five Passes or Southland?

Yes. The  Gorges Grand Prix  is designed as a  pre-Five Passes  and  pre-Southland Tour  hit-out: fast start, honest hills, and a decisive finish.

What grading or handicap system is used?

It’s a  handicap race  . Slower groups roll first; faster groups chase. Ride smart, share the work, and you’ll be in the mix.

Is the course flat or hilly?

Both.  20 km flat  , then  rolling hills  over  Summer Hill  , and a  2.5% drag  on  German Road  before a  500 m sprint  .

What about refunds or transfers?

See the entry form for the  refund/transfer policy  and any weather contingencies.

Where exactly is the start/finish?

Loburn School, North Canterbury  . Sign-on, start, finish, and  prizegiving  are all based there.

How long does the race take?

Allow the morning:  8:00am start  , finishers around lunchtime (  ~12:00pm  ).

Can I see the entry list or start list?

Yep — check the  [Entry List / Start List]  page before race day.

Are e-bikes or aero bars allowed?

This is a  bunch road race  .  No aero bars in bunches.  E-bike policy:  race organiser’s call  ; see entry form notes.

Is the race on open roads?

Yes.  NZ open-road conditions  apply. Follow all  New Zealand road rules  ; marshals are there to guide, not stop traffic.
